Cancellation & Refunds

Client-Initiated Cancellations

Because trail logistics, running guides, and Ministry of Culture permits must be arranged well in advance, our cancellation tiers reflect the unrecoverable costs incurred by Kuska Expeditions as your trek date approaches.

1
Important: The Non-Refundable Deposit

The initial deposit required to secure your Inca Trail, alternative trek, or Machu Picchu permits is 100% non-refundable and non-transferable. The Peruvian Government strictly forbids name, date, or passport changes on purchased permits.

2
30+ Days Notice

If you cancel the total expedition more than 30 days before departure, you will lose the initial deposit, but you will not be required to pay the remaining balance. If you prepaid in full, the balance (minus the deposit and bank fees) will be refunded.

3
15 to 29 Days Notice

Cancellations within this window incur a penalty of 50% of the total expedition cost. The logistics, transportation, and guide rosters have already been finalized by our Ollantaytambo operations team.

4
Less than 14 Days / No Show

Cancellations made 14 days or less prior to departure—or failure to attend the pre-trek briefing—incur a 100% penalty. No refunds will be issued under any circumstances.

Unforeseen Events & Expedition Alterations

Cancellations by Kuska Expeditions
In the highly unlikely event that we must cancel an expedition before departure (due to internal operational failures), we will offer a 100% full refund of all payments made, or the opportunity to re-book an equivalent trek at no additional cost.
Force Majeure (Strikes, Landslides, Extreme Weather)
The Andes are subject to unpredictable conditions. If social strikes in Cusco/Ollantaytambo, train blockades, or natural disasters prevent an expedition from departing, we will offer alternative dates or alternative trekking routes. If you cannot accept the alternatives, a refund will be issued minus the cost of non-refundable permits and administrative expenses.
Leaving the Trek Early
If you must leave the trail early due to altitude sickness, personal injury, or lack of fitness, no refunds will be issued for the missed days. Furthermore, the client is responsible for any extra evacuation costs (train tickets, emergency transport, hotel nights). We will provide all necessary documentation for your travel insurance claims.
Travel Insurance Requirement
Due to the strict nature of our cancellation policies, we require all trekkers and runners to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, interruption, high-altitude trekking, and emergency medical evacuation.
