Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to help you prepare for this challenging high-altitude expedition.
How difficult is the Ausangate Trek?
The Ausangate trek is widely considered one of the most challenging treks in Peru, primarily due to the extreme altitude and unpredictable weather. You will cross multiple mountain passes over 5,000 meters (16,400+ feet). Excellent physical fitness and stamina are required.
Do I need to acclimatize beforehand?
Absolutely. We mandate that all trekkers spend at least 3 to 4 days adjusting to the altitude in Cusco or the Sacred Valley prior to starting the Ausangate trek. Failing to acclimatize properly significantly increases the risk of severe altitude sickness.
What is the weather like on the trail?
The weather is extremely variable. During the day, the intense high-altitude sun can make it quite warm for hiking. However, temperatures drop drastically the moment the sun sets, and nights below freezing are guaranteed. You must pack proper thermal layers and a high-quality sub-zero sleeping bag.
