Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to help you prepare for exploring the living Inca city.
How strenuous is the climbing in Ollantaytambo?
Exploring the main fortress involves climbing a long, steep set of Inca stone stairs to reach the Temple of the Sun. While it requires a moderate level of fitness, we take the climb slowly with many stops to discuss the history and catch our breath. The optional Pinkuylluna hike is also a steep, albeit short, climb.
What is the altitude of Ollantaytambo?
Ollantaytambo sits at approximately 2,792 meters (9,160 feet) above sea level. Because it is lower than the city of Cusco, many travelers find it much easier to breathe and hike here, making it a great stop for acclimatization.
What should I bring?
Bring a small daypack, comfortable walking shoes (sneakers are fine for the ruins), a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a light jacket or sweater, and a water bottle. A camera is a must for the incredible stonework and valley views!
